Lassoing Horses

At a farm in Waimea, Hawaii Island. I couldn't confirm whether this was part of the 2013 Hawaii Horse Expo, but a horse-lassoing competition was held in a stretch of land on Kawaihae Road.

Calves would be released, and two riders had to successfully lasso the head and leg as fast as possible. (Or at least, this is what I gleaned from watching them.)
There was one woman who was significantly better than everyone.

This one was for practice.

The belt, the boots, the hat -- all markers of cowboy culture.

I have to say, there was a part of me that thought, "Oh the poor little things."

Inside the horse trailer.
